Progression: Mock Interview

Mock Interview:

Introduction: What is a Mock Interview?

A mock interview is an interview that is simulated to imitate an interview in a real life setting. Mock interviews are often conducted in education - as a means to inform prospective employees about interview techniques that can be used in a real-life interview.

Benefits of completing a Mock Interview:

Benefits of completing a mock interview include:
  • an opportunity to receive feedback from a lecturer whom has experience in the given field.
  • boosts confidence
  • articulate body language and answers in a real life setting

Mock Interview Preparation: Good Practice for Mock Interviews

  • Be sure to take your mock interview as seriously as you would an actual interview. Get ready for the interview just as you would for an interview with a hiring manager:
  • Arrive 10 - 15 minutes early, and bring your resume and any other materials you would bring to a real interview.
  • Bring a notebook to take notes on what your mock interviewer tells you.
  • Dress in professional interview attire.
  • Be sure all your technology is in working order when you're participating in a video interview.

Mock Interview Preparation: Client Research

Our mock interview was posed to us as a hypothetical interview with Channel 4 - to preface it was not actually involved with Channel 4 itself or it's affiliates, rather this was a means for us to research our client in greater detail which is common practice in industry when preparing for a mock interview. Understanding your client prior to conducting an interview is crucial - as it conveys to the interviewer that you have genuine interest in your role, it also shows a level of intuition on the behalf of the interviewee which demonstrates ones ability to research.

Channel 4 is freely available to all of the UK. Channel 4 has the UK’s biggest free streaming service, All 4. It has a network of 12 television channels. Since Channel 4 was created in 1982, it has been at the Centre of national conversations and a catalyst for the creation of a world-beating production sector in the UK. Our purpose is to create change through entertainment. We do this by representing unheard voices, challenging with purpose and reinventing entertainment.

Our unique model – commercially-funded but publicly-owned – means that we’re able to offer independent and distinctive, universal content reflecting the interests of different communities across the UK. As a publisher-broadcaster, Channel 4 commissions UK content from the independent production sector and currently works with around 300 creative companies across the UK every year.

To further my understanding of how to prepare myself for this interview, I found this article on the official Channel 4 website: Channel 4 Interview Support and Advice. I believe this is a reliable source as it is coming directly from Channel 4 therefore the parameters set by them for an interview will ring true in the process of an interview with them. This is advantageous in comparison to taking general advice for mock interviews as each client will have different expectations for their prospective employees.
